I try and do silly things in my classroom and I’m not afraid to make mistakes in front of my students. They are more willing to open up in my classroom. If students see me be vulnerable I think they see the classroom as a safe space. Things that I have done are displaying student work, singing happy birthday to students in Polish, greeting kids as they come in the classroom, hanging rubber chickens in my room, etc.
msansonParticipantHow might you create new opportunities so that each student begins to actively drive their own learning?
Giving students some choice and allowing them to select topics to learn more about in depth.
What connections do you see between John Hattie’s advocacy for teacher learning communities and Amy Berry’s Engagement Continuum?
Both want what is best for teachers/students and want everyone to be successful. One focuses more on student engagement and the other on teachers and them working together but in the end both want everyone to experience success.
What is the connection between collective teacher expertise and empowering active student engagement? Teachers working together can be a great thing to increase student engagement. Modeling cooperation for students is important. -
