I think the hardest thing will be the organization of all of the different accommodations and trying to meet so many different needs. In the past I have had huge online classes and trying to meet the needs of 60 plus students is challenging. I do like some of the ideas offered in the course of taking a time limit off exams so everyone has as much time as needed. In the past I would go in and modify individual students and by assigning a blanket policy of no time limit could help everyone.

Just like everyone else I see more students with IEPs, 504 or ILPs. Many of these stem from anxiety and depression. These issues certainly impact academic success. I also see students who don’t want to do the work. I have changed so many things from 10 years ago and I still have so many students failing because they won’t do the work. Trying to get parents involved sometimes helps. I also think giving students choices helps with academic success.

At the end of each year students get to pick a country from the Eastern Hemisphere to research in depth and present to the class. I could use this choice board to give further direction to students.

Help Make this In-Person Activity Virtual

We do a lot with population density and we have a box taped off in the classroom that represents 10sq feet and we have a certain number of students stand in the box to represent how densely populated places in the world are. I’m not sure how I would make this virtual.

I often use map games on the computer and we race to see if students can beat the teacher in time or number of countries correct. It’s a fun, quick activity that gets everyone involved and active at the same time. It also shows that I can make mistakes and the kids seem to appreciate that as well.

At the beginning of the year I like to use get to know you activities to try and foster some connection. I do think this will be more difficult online especially given the number of students we are sometimes given in online courses. I also like to ask kids what they are doing over the weekend or if they had a good weekend when they return on Monday. If they are wearing a sports team or music group tshirt or other clothing that can be an easy way to connect as well.

I know that this will be a work in progress as I get more comfortable with teaching online. After putting this together I do like some of the ideas of using the school motto so I might try and incorporate that into my matrix in the future.

I use Kahoot and Quizlet for reviews before we take a test. I was not familiar with Quizzzes but I checked that out and it looks to be a lot like Kahoot and Quizlet. I like to use these game type activities in my classes because kids seem to like them and be engaged when we use them. The one problem that I see with these is when every teacher uses the same thing it gets a bit boring for the student. One teacher tells another teacher about this new things and then it spreads and kids sometimes get bored with the same things. I try to rotate different reviews to keep them engaged.

As has been stated before, we use Canvas as our LMS. I like that all of the information for the student can be found in one place. I believe this one place to keep everything helps students and teachers stay organized. I use the calendar feature for each day and link all of my assignments, readings, video clips, games, etc. on the calendar link. This makes it particularly helpful for students who are absent. I think this system would also work well for students who work at a faster or slower pace also. I often make videos using screencastify and link them to my calendar also. Having one place to store all of the materials for the class helps everyone involved.

Getting to know students online is the thing I find most challenging. I know that I do my best work in the mornings. That is not always the time when students do their best work. I also find it challenging when you reach out to the students via email, text, messages, etc and you get no response back from the students. As a teacher you are trying to establish that connection and there is no response from the student. I find this situation to be most frustrating and challenging. I supposed something I could try doing is making more videos and allowing students to make more videos back to me instead of all written work. This might encourage and motivate some other learners.

As an virtual teacher the number of emails coming in can sometimes be overwhelming. One thing that I try to stay organized is staying on top of emails. If I get an email and can answer it quickly and take care of it I do that immediately. I keep my inbox with only emails that need some type of action on my part. If there is no action needed by me I file the email away right away. Anything in my inbox needs my attention. Only after I have finished the task do I move it to a folder. This way of staying on top of emails has worked for me and helps me stay organized and not get overwhelmed.

Building relationships with students needs to be a priority of any teacher in todays world. In order for the student to put forth effort in a class, students need to feel like the teacher respects them as an individual. Teachers can establish a positive learning environment by giving students a voice with the rules, procedures and regulations for the class. Students will rise to the occasion when given the opportunity. Students need to feel safe in the class. They need to feel like they can ask questions and share their viewpoints without criticism from the teacher or peers. Of course not everyone is going to agree with all of the viewpoints and opinions but people have to feel like their are safe to share their ideas and viewpoints. Not agreeing is ok, being disrespectful with comments and gestures back is not ok in a safe environment. Giving students a choice in their learning and assessment will not only make the learning more engaging for the student but for the teacher as well.

I would think that students might feel more comfortable presenting and hearing criticism from peers. More and more I have found that students are reluctant to present to the entire class. Things like presenting to a peer as a practice has worked well. Students also feel more comfortable presenting online or where they can record and edit their presentations. These changes to presenting in front of the entire class have worked well. Feedback from peers is another great way for students to learn.

I looked at Pear Deck after reading many of these responses. I liked what I saw and it seemed to have a lot of features all in one site. I especially like how the site allowed teachers to record lessons and students to respond to prompts. I could see using this program when looking at studying different locations around the world. The one downfall that I find with new programs is that once one teacher uses it and finds success with it and shares it with colleagues then everyone is again using the same program and kids get bored with the same programs in each class. I’ve seen this a lot with game type programs- quizlet, blooket, kahoot, etc. It’s great and exciting for a short time and then the kids get sick of it because it is then used in every class.
