ParticipantWhat trends are you seeing with your students?
What recurring successes or struggles do you see?I am seeing an increase in 504’s that allow 3 days extra after the posting of a grade. Every school year my 504 list gets larger.
I seat the ELL students close to my desk so I can assist them and answer questions. I also use textbook/ workbook resources that have been translated as support materials. It’s working well.

I have the students do a Bill of Rights scavenger hunt. They find statement related to the amendments, bring them back to class and physically sit down at the designated amendment table.

ParticipantI teach senior government students. I open class with a daily trivia question, the day’s weather forecast, and a dad joke. The students laugh or boo, but it is all in good fun and engagement.

ParticipantI think its fun to talk to the students about good places to eat here in town, or on vacations. It creates a bond, the food bond!

ParticipantI like to send a personal email to the students and their parents after a test or at the end of a term. I include positive statements about their performance, good attendance, work ethic, etc.
I do get a lot of positive feedback especially from the parents. It adds a personal touch to the high school experience.tmartin

ParticipantThe lesson is on the Cold War.
Imbedded videos support the lesson.
Guided notes are also used to follow along.tmartin
ParticipantI use my Canvas Modules to present lesson materials, such as the Module on the Bill of Rights. I teach the Bill of Rights as a ‘Mastery’ lesson.
I utilize google meet for live instruction. The setback for those meetings is that some of my students are also enrolled in a live course at school in the same period. For those students I check in with them during their study hall time. The lessons are assigned one week ahead of the due date for any lessons, tests, or quizzes.

ParticipantCanvas is the preferred LMS for our school corporation. I use Canvas for all my classes. The calendar is very useful because it is linked to the assignments which are located in modules. Modules include lessons, links to external sources, and quizzes/ Tests.
My homepage has all the contact information and class procedures and policies.

ParticipantA description of what you find most challenging about online teaching
Maintaining student engagement and keeping students on a regular pace in a virtual class.I use daily announcements via Canvas and keep office hours so that the students know that they can reach me
when they need assistance. Simply being available for the student has improved engagement.tmartin

A description of a specific organizational tool or tip that you use.
To keep myself organized I have a desk calendar that sits on my desk that I use as a quick reference guide for my day. To keep the students organized I utilize the Canvas calendar. The Canvas calendar is a great tool to provide the student with what has been missed if they are absent or what is up and coming. Students and parents can easily access the Canvas calendar to keep up and make up missed lessons which improves outcomes.
The Canvas calendar is updated daily.tmartin
ParticipantI do something similar with my class. I return the test or quiz without marking the correct answer.
The students form groups, and help each other correct their mistakes by using the lesson resources to make the corrections.
They will resubmit the quiz or test with their corrections. For every correct answer I give them half credit back to improve the grade, and they learned from the errors.tmartin
ParticipantHow will you prioritize relationship building?
To build a relationship with other humans requires that I as the teacher open the year, and each day, with a positive message. Greet people with a smile. Call them by their name. Ask the students if there is anything I can do to help them out today. How will you establish a positive learning community?
The positive learning community is based on mutual respect. Students must be aware that they can achieve much more individually and as a group if they recognize that each person in the classroom has their own background and experiences. It’s important for the classroom to share those experiences by celebrating birthdays, awards, accomplishments, and even some concerns. How will you bring your curriculum to life for your students?
By sharing the experiences of real people in real situations, in history and government. How do your assessment and grading practices align with your vision for learner engagement?
I like to give my students mini-projects that allow them to utilize their talents. This allows the students to submit the project in a form that in aligned with their interests and talents. Some students like to draw. I allow a hand drawn project. Some students are great at CANVA. I allow the student to submit the project using CANVA. I get much better projects when I am flexible with the format and style.tmartin
ParticipantAs I introduce the Bill of Rights to my students, I ask them to identify the most important right to them personally. They present their thoughts to the class and we can all share the experience of how we are all connected through the document.
