One of my favorite ways to create lasting relationships with a student is to provide 1:1 time through mini-conferences or meetings to get to know them, their interests, etc. I make the time to meet with each student for a get-to-know-the-teacher so I can learn about them and then connect what they are learning to something applicable in their world or relevance.

I really like using Padlet to allow students to collaborate. It shows me how they are understanding the information. I have used most of these tools for years, so I have no issues with them.

We use several different systems depending on the content provider and district. I always include: Instructor contact information,
Class announcements, and Communication expectations in my digital homebase. Then, the links are specific to either provided resources for all assignments or content specific and posted throughout the announcements as time goes on in the class.

The hardest part is getting students to attend live lessons and engage. I have found that using Kahoot or Slido to start class gets them excited to come, and once they are there, I can engage them.

ASANA is an awesome tool for personal or team/department collaboration on projects and tasks. It takes my teacher list of to-dos and streamlines it so I do not lose critical items I am wanting to create or explore for my students.

Gifted students are equally important learners.

Do Aliyah and Christopher remind you of any students in your classroom? What special support would you say your gifted students need right now?

They both remind me of students I have had over the years. They represent some of the more common traits I have seen in my own classroom. The highest need my gifted students need now is in the social-emotional development category as they mostly struggle with age-group peer relationships.

What are the implications of not identifying or misidentifying a gifted child?

The implications of not identifying or misidentifying a gifted child can run the range of their current achievement to future achievement. Not allowing a child to have the accommodations or resources needed to meet their needs can limit or inhibit their natural and learned abilities leading to lifelong struggles in academic, social, and emotional development.

What experience have you had when advocating for the needs of gifted learners? I have experienced this as a teacher in my classroom and as a parent of twice-exceptional children. It has not been easy on either side as it has taken a mountain of evidence to get district officials to engage properly.

Is there anything which you have found to be difficult to understand or explain about the need for gifted education? There is a lack of overall understanding that giftedness and smart or high-achieving are not all the same thing. With that in mind, it has been hard to explain in a way that non-educators understand the need as it is highly rooted in knowing and understanding child development as well.

What is the best way to dispel myths or stereotypes about gifted students? The best way is through education and training with real-life experience testimonials.
