ParticipantI modified it by adding bullet points under “Stay safe online” to show how do stay safe online. I also reworded a few things.

This is on the different methods of factoring quadratics. There are videos and practice problems for each method. I tried to get videos from different people so that students aren’t listening to the same person each time in hopes that the videos wouldn’t become monotonous. I also tried to find short videos.

ParticipantFirst, I will have the students watch this video to introduce the idea of imaginary numbers. Next we will go over a set of notes to explain the concept of imaginary numbers to them. These notes will also include practice problems that we will go over together. After the notes, students will then work on two practice problems by themselves, they will then be put into breakout rooms where they can discus what they got, and how they got it. For the knowledge check students will do a short MathXL assignment. Students can use the “view example” button on MathXL if they need help. If they need more help beyond the view example, they can then ask me. With a few minutes left of class I will ask students which questions on the assignment are they having difficulty with.
What part of your live lesson went well? Why?
Students seem to enjoy the video. Imaginary numbers are a strange concept for students to understand, mostly because of the unfortunate name. The video is engaging, does a great job of explaining why imaginary numbers are not actually imaginary. What part of your live lesson could go better? Why?
Notes always seems to loose some students. With math it seems like notes and lecturing are a necessary evil. There’s just so much to explain, and much of it is not intuitive. Students don’t have a long attention span, and so keeping their attention during notes can be difficult.Identify 1-2 areas where you think you can improve. What would you do differently next time?
Next time during notes I will try to do less example problems together so that they have more time working on problems themselves. Less time for notes and more time when they are doing something will also mean that they will be engaged longer.Ryan Braun
ParticipantWe use Schoology. On Schoology I upload all the notes that we take in class and I organize them by chapter so that students who weren’t there for notes (or students who lost their notes) can find them easily. I also post updates to the entire class regularly, to remind them of upcoming assignments, quizzes, and tests. I recently started putting stories in the updates that seem unrelated to the class just so at the end I can remind them about something. I found more students read the updates when I did that.

ParticipantI think the most challenging part of online teaching is keeping students engaged. When teaching in-person, it’s easier to see what students are not engaged, and to talk to them, or get them started on the first step of what they are supposed to be doing. I think monitoring their progress closely and being quick to reach out, both to the student and the parents, when a student is not progressing will help with this. Also, trying to do more fun activities, like Kahoot, or digital escape rooms can help with this as well.

ParticipantI use OneNote when I’m writing things for my students to take notes over. What’s great about OneNote is that you can make folders to organize everything. I have my notes organized by school year, class, and chapter. It’s great because if I want to see what I did a previous year, or if I want to refer students back to a set of notes that we did before, they are always easy to find. It’s also easy to send the notes to my email, so that I can then upload them to Schoology. I know you can also share notebooks with students, but I haven’t gotten into that aspect of it yet.
