Which of the blended learning models will work best for your students? Explain why.

While none of the models exactly fit my students’ needs (as they will all be fully on-site), I am a big fan of the A/B split model as I believe that, especially at High School level onwards, students should use class time to discuss and produce with their peers, having done core readings (including video-watching) in their own time. This way, students are individually responsible for their first interaction with the content and can do so in their own pace and comfort (individually or in groups), and use class time to ask questions, work through problems and difficulties, and work on projects.

Visualize your classroom with the model that you selected. What might it look and sound like for the teacher and students?

Using the A/B split model as a reference, students will do key readings before lessons on any given topic, that way being prepared for class discussions and activities. Class time is focused on thinking critically and further developing students’ abilities and knowledge from a common shared level. Class time focuses on promoting student interaction, reducing teacher-led exposition; and at home students develop their independence and proactivity.

What are your initial thoughts about blended learning?

At the same time that education remains traditional (like using written exams as a primary form of assessment, for example), it is also often at the forefront of technology (AI companies investing heavily in learning applications, for example). Blended learning represents a new and increasingly common front of education that allows learners a greater reach than their immediate settings allow. In the case of ASU’s High School program, I see first hand the benefit international students have in accessing a high quality curriculum that differs from their own and builds them into more complete, global citizens.

How do you define blended learning?

Using available tools to enhance learning beyond the classroom and promote student proactivity.
