ParticipantBeth, do you have any good suggestions for general types of questions that are safe and will break the ice to get a relationship started?

ParticipantI have found that bonding with students over something non-academic like enjoying food or a movie together has been a valuable experience. Also, working with students on a shared project apart from the classroom setting has been helpful. Generally, just taking an interest in their lives helps them to know that you care.

ParticipantThis is just preliminary. I would still continue to alter it as my online classroom experience grows.

My hyper doc is to introduce the law of conservation of energy. PHET simulations do a better job sometimes of explaining a concept with hands on examples rather than lecture or notes. I use these in my regular classroom and no just in a virtual setting.

ParticipantSchoology is the learning management system used in our district to communicate announcements, instructions, assignments, calendars and any other information from teacher to student or student to teacher. Folders are used to organize and categorize everything to make it easy for student to get what they need. Links to web materials or videos or Google forms etc can be provided through Schoology which all students have access to through their account.

ParticipantEngaging students in the online setting is difficult. I like the idea of doing exactly what we are doing here and using a discussion board to require students to take an active role in the lesson. Chat features of online meeting apps might also be a way to require students to engage in the lesson. Making these things a requirement would force students to participate at least at a minimal level.

ParticipantI make e mail folders for everything and have a folder for important e mails that I go back and check on a regular basis. If I don’t have time to respond to something immediately, I stick it in the “important” e mail folder and go back to it later in the day. Each student that I correspond with on a regular basis gets their own folder as well. Correspondence with students is quick and easy and folders help prevent students requests for help from “falling in the cracks” during the day.
