Need help improving a group project.

Students are put into groups and are tasked with researching and presenting on a body system. Groups have a few options for what form their presentation will take, but they all must answer 9 specific questions about their body system. Rubric is provided. What online tools would you suggest to help students divide up the work equally and to keep pace?

I believe that you have a very engaging lesson that is planned out very well. It uses technology and offers a lot of opportunities for student success. Thanks for sharing.

Sometimes it is difficult to not go into “lecture” mode when you have to speak through a camera. Also with middle school students they have very short attention spans and information has to be simplified in a way that they can truly begin to grasp the concept. Once they do begin to understand, they take it away themselves and its all about guiding them. This is a great lesson.

I don’t have any live lessons at all as my online class is technically an off campus course. Students will have my online class on their schedules at the same time as another class. The expectation is that students complete the work on their own time and there is no designated “class time”.

What tends to go will is the structure that I have set up. Everything that students need to know is provided for them and they have access to everything. What could improve is the administrative structure of the course. I don’t believe that we as a district effectively communicate to students and parents what the class actually is.

in reply to: 1.8 Challenges of Teaching Online #6483

The biggest challenge I have with online learning is communication. I email students multiple times a week about assignments and I rarely get a response from the students who are struggling. The next step is to email parents and sometimes the apple does not fall far from the tree. There has been some success with parent emails and getting students to be more responsible but that never last long. It really boils down to student motivation. In addition to email, I have office hours and very few students have taken that opportunity to ask questions.

I am pretty old school in this regard and I actually keep everything organized on a flash drive. I have everything I need in all the right places. In this new digital world, I have slowly been recreating those documents into Google Docs and storing them on my Google Drive, also in all the right places. Once I have a new Google Doc, I download it into a word doc and put it into my flash drive.

Feedback is an open line of communication between both teacher and student. As teachers, we need to give feedback students so that they can better understand how they learn best. We use all the tools on our utility belt to ensure that students are successful. On the backside of that, we teachers also need to provide a space for students to give us feedback and let me know how they felt about a unit or an assignment. Of course we can’t reach every single one of our students effectively, however we can give them tools for their utility belts so that when the time comes where they approach a new subject, they know how they learn best and can be successful.

Headphones tend to be a bigger issue than what is called for these days. It is good to see that you have figured out a productive way to incorporate them into your classes. I can greatly appreciate the flexibility and creativeness of a veteran teacher.
