    “Collective teacher expertise maximizes the strengths of every teacher” – I agree. They call this synergy in the business world. The idea of working in teams is that the whole is greater than the individual parts. If teacher expertise is the single biggest factor influencing students performance, and collaboration maximizes teacher expertise, then we as teachers, have a professional responsibility to collaborate, to seek to maximise student outcomes.

    It might be beneficial to students and teachers if teachers use the PLC framework, by getting together to share experiences, even across courses, as we implement the ASU program.

    How might you create new opportunities so that each student begins to actively drive their own learning?
    Incorporating activities that allow for multiple forms of engagement should encourage engagement from more students. Complex group tasks can allow for a mix of intellectual, social, physical, behavioral, emotional, and cultural engagement. Some students will favor one or some types of engagement but working in a group allows all students opportunities to experience and participate in all forms of engagement.
    What connections do you see between John Hattie’s advocacy for teacher learning communities and Amy Berry’s Engagement Continuum?
    Hattie asserts teachers’ collective expertise is the biggest factor influencing students. Berry asserts that engagement is a continuum along which students can move, in both directions. Teachers collective expertise can positively influence student engagement.
    What is the connection between collective teacher expertise and empowering active student engagement?
    Collective teacher expertise, through sharing experiences of student’s engagement, should enable teachers to develope more informed ‘expert’ strategies and interventions that positively influence student engagement.
