During the course of reading the novel Linked by Gordon Korman, students will read a section of the book and then watch a few clips from a documentary revolving around what was called the Paperclip Project and the Holocaust. After watching the clips, they will respond to a brief prompt posted in Schoology to share their insights and reflections. This helps students connect with something fictional they are reading with something in real life that they might be able to relate to in some way.

My live middle school lesson would begin with a short video link explaining the definition of three figurative language terms: simile, metaphor and hyperbole. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLw5DSyYsaI
After watching the short 4 minute video, we would practice simple identification together through a discussion of various examples and follow up with a quick fun Kahoot to review.

What went well? Students enjoy watching short engaging video clips and playing Kahoot.
What could go better? Trying to facilitate discussion online about different figurative examples is more difficult because students tend to be reluctant to answer questions about a new concept. I think I would try to model more examples prior to group discussion. I would also have them try to generate a few examples of their own prior to playing Kahoot.

Kahoot is an all-time student favorite and you can find so many pre-made activities to share with students on the fly, if needed for extra review. Creating your own Kahoots are also fun because they can be personalized to your specific lesson. But I agree that it can become monotonous for students when so many teachers are utilizing the same tools. Some variation is always good for keeping students engaged.

I also tend to struggle with technology that I am unfamiliar with and it seems that I sometimes spend more time trying to “figure out” something new instead of just relying on the “tried and true” tools. However, I can see the benefit of exploring new apps and features that the students might find more appealing.

Our district has used Schoology as the LMS for years which makes it easy for students to navigate through various courses sice they are familiar with the set up. I can post course updates, calendars, links to important resources, etc. Everything is organized weekly with colored folders and all of the necessary links, documents, and additional resources needed for that week’s lessons can be found in one place. All of their work can be shared through this platform. They can also take quizzes/tests that can be scored immediately so they have instant feedback. Students can also communicate with me via Schoology messaging.

One of the most challenging aspects of online teaching for me would be getting to know their individual personalities and ways that I can support their learning. I would establish consistent virtual office hours in order to get to know the students and have a few key topics prepared so I could get to know them and what challenges they may feel that they will face while trying to be an online student. I would also ask them how I could best support their learning and what they would need from me as their instructor.

If I am using an LMS like Schoology, I like to use different color folders for different units of study, organizing everything by date. This makes is easier for the students to find what they need quickly and efficiently. It also make it easy for me to add or delete content as needed.
