Here is the link to one of the lessons I facilitated for a book study with 9th graders:

What part of your live lesson went well? Why? The portions of the lesson that went really well were the ones where I asked students to give answers to “basic recall” questions. These were very popular, and I had a “waterfall” of replies in the chat when I posed these kinds of questions.

What part of your live lesson could go better? Why? The part of the lesson that could go better would be the ones where I posed questions that were more open-ended, personal, and required students to verbalize their thoughts rather than text them. Students were more reserved in sharing their thoughts and experiences aloud.

Identify 1-2 areas where you think you can improve. What would you do differently next time? I would focus on improving the open-ended portion of my lessons moving forward by stating at the beginning of the virtual lesson that all participants will need to share their thoughts aloud for at least ONE of the open-ended questions. And as participants share throughout the lesson, I would put a check next to their name on the participant roster I had next to me.

I can see where you feel as if the “novelty” of a apps and tech tools can wear off and student interest lessens. This is where the mantra “everything in moderation” comes in to play, I believe. Use it enough to wear they are more engaged and not so much that it’s “just another thing.” I also think adding competitive twists when using such apps can increase engagement and make the experience feel new or even like a “first.”

I agree with Amy! Focus on learning one and once I feel comfortable with that one, experiment with another.

Love that you use Quizizz! And seeing you use this in action has been even more rewarding and gratifying for me! Students really do engage with this app!

We use Schoology. I use Schoology to share important announcements with Grades 9-12 students, send each student a personal Happy Birthday message on their birthday (yes, even in the summer), and share encouraging messages with all Grades 9-12 students two times a week through my series of messages called “Words For a Year.”

A description of what you find most challenging about online teaching ~ Engaging students from their home is and can be very challenging when teaching online.

A possible solution to your challenge, using a tool, tip, or strategy you learned ~ I use the chat feature in Google Meets and require all students to provide response to the questions I pose in my prepared slide deck and ones that I spontaneously think of in the middle of teaching. (I use a very similar strategy when meeting with teachers and engaging them in professional development virtually).

A link to the tool, if applicable ~ Google Meets

An explanation of how this tool, tip, or strategy can help you improve your experience as an online teacher ~ Using the chat feature helps me hear from all students, identify students who are trying to hide, and improves my communication skills and my relatability with the students and teachers I interact with virtually.

A description of a specific organizational tool or tip that you use ~ I use Google Drive and organize my files and documents in ways that make accessing them easy, quick, and efficient.

An example of how you’ve integrated this tool or tip in your own teaching workflow ~ I use Google Drive to send and share documents, files, and entire folders as a way to equip others with the resources they need to be more successful and effective.

A link to the tool, if applicable ~ Google Drive

An explanation of how this tip can help improve instructional or student outcomes ~ Using Google Drive helps me access my resources quicker, so I can make every minute of instruction count in the classroom and as an administrator improve both instructional and student outcomes by sharing what I developed and harvested over the past few years with the teachers I have the chance to work with and support.
