Making sure that students don’t feel overwhelmed and forgotten amongst the crowd. I do think it’s important to have those check-ins to make sure that students feel that their accommodations are being met and that they are given additional assistance if needed.

Students are often sooooo quiet! They’re addicted to social media and love communicating through a device, but face to face is tough. In Spanish, it’s a language and they have to speak. At first, it is difficult but you learn really fast who each student feels comfortable with. I have “buddy sheets” for my students that give everyone 10 random buddies. So sometimes they get to work with a friend and sometimes someone new. They get to meet different people. I also like a classroom of mutual respect and students know that they are in a safe place.

I have my students pretend that they are at a restaurant and they have to order food in Spanish. Maybe I could have them do this is a zoom meeting?

On fridays, I ask my students what their plans are for the weekend. On Mondays, I ask everyone what they did over the weekend. And throughout the week, I like to throw out random questions like about traveling, books, dreams, future goals, etc.

I feel like the most important thing that a teacher can do is get to know their students. I like to do daily bell ringers (in Spanish) and often they’re questions about their families, likes, dislikes, hobbies, friends, weekend plans, etc.

I actually was a stay-at-home mom during COVID so I did not have the same experience as my fellow educators. I was on the other side of it. I was the parent trying to teach my then kindergarten son how to learn to read and do math. Even though my son’s teachers would try to teach online, it wasn’t the same experience for him, so I had to supplement the lessons with youtube videos, online activities, and other fun strategies.

Our school uses Schoology. This is where I post all announcements for my classes, including due dates, quiz dates, friendly reminders and links. I also upload all notes, homework, and additional resources for my students to access if they are absent or want extra help.

A challenge that I think so many teachers face is keeping their students’ engaged and focused while there are so many distractions around them while at home. I have done some synchronous lessons before and I feel that a great way to keep students engaged is by keeping the lesson fun. We usually play a game like “Guess Who” or Taboo in Spanish.

Our school uses Schoology and I love it for keeping all of my files organized for each class. It’s also very helpful and convenient for when students are absent so that they can keep up with missing work.
