Before beginning To Kill a Mockingbird, students need to create some historical context.

Students learn about different aspects of the Great Depression and then have to describe a day in the life.

What part of your live lesson went well? Why? Student participation in the Kahoot and guided notes. Students found it fun.

What part of your live lesson could go better? Why? Working in groups in a virtual setting is difficult, and several students were disengaged. It’s difficult to monitor students in groups when they’re all in one room, so having to jump from breakout session to breakout session allows a lot of time for students to get off task.

Identify 1-2 areas where you think you can improve. What would you do differently next time? I would probably keep students together longer and give less time for group work vs. individual/whole-class work.

I totally understand about not having the time to learn all the new things. I try to focus on just learning one for each category (video vs. notes vs. game) and then make that work for whatever I need.

I try to pick one tool for each aspect (notes vs. videos vs. games) and just focus on getting comfortable with that. It may not always be the most popular, but I don’t have time to perfect everything.

I personally like using Kahoots in class, but my students enjoy a good Blooket, so I’m trying to branch out a bit. I made a Blooket for our academic vocab.

I think it’s just challenging to keep everything straight and determine what’s best to use when. I like to work on finding one tool for each process (lesson vs. video vs. gamify) and working to get solid using it as opposed to using different ones for everything.

We use Schoology as our LMS. I have a copy of my syllabus with contact information posted. I also have the Google Meet link with the specific class time posted for each mod. There are also links to the programs we use, like IXL, Turnitin, and Quill. These all help because the first two provide specific information for students, and the other 3 are programs we use regularly.

Staying on top of student/parent contact while also teaching/grading is difficult. Setting aside specific office hours to address student/parent concerns/questions would help alleviate feeling like “oh no, there’s another email I have to respond to before doing _________.” Having set office hours would allow me to use the rest of my time to focus on non-contact work, like grading and planning.

I create weekly folders on our LMS with a daily summary of classroom activities with important reminders and information discussed in class. I tell students from the start that this is where they need to go if they’re absent/forget something, and then students can come to me with specific questions but not the general “What do I need to do? What did I miss?” questions. It helps hold students accountable and allows them to keep working independently.
